Possum Knits® Info

We endeavour to use all Australian pure  wool for our soakers as we know that it is the very best wool available and also because we feel strongly that it is important to support the Australian wool industry. We do not knit with fur or hair or blends of these fibres.Any soaker that includes any non-Australian wool with have that listed in the description.

We are proud to be associated with New Life Woolens™ as a Cottage Industry Licence holder. Keep an eye on the Possum Knits® page for crocheted skorts, skants, longies, shorts and capris made under the terms of this licence

Check out the soakers page for more info. Our TERMS can be found HERE  Please do not machine wash or tumble dry our hand knitted pure wool garments.

Soakers do NOT need to be felted in order for them to work so it is important to get the right temperature when washing, and to not agitate the item any more than is necessary; for this reason, in our opinion it is essential they are hand washed.

***When washing and/or lanolising, after carefully rolling in a towel to absorb excess water, lay the soaker on a rack or flat sweater drying rack and gently pull the top and bottom edges back to their original shape. If this is done at each wash the soaker should retain the original rise measurement and not shorten, as long as care has been taken with the washing procedure ***

In  most cases, in stock items are posted the same day payment is received. Colours that have been sold can be knitted again  but some of the variegated wool is hand dyed so sometimes we are unable to obtain more that is exactly the same. We use only hand washable wool of good quality. Our 2 knitters have over 120 years of knitting experience between them and have knitted professionally,  exhibited and judged knitting. Our pattern has been used by our knitters for over 60 years. All soakers are lanolised before posting. Postage is usually $4 for one soaker or pair of longies, $5 for more than one item. We try to keep our soakers practical and wearable rather than elaborate and high priced .From time to time however, a very "special" one may appear so watch this space. We use twisted or crocheted cords in our soakers.

Soakers and longies can be knitted flat or in the round

If you require something knitted a different way please ask, otherwise we knit to the standard pattern for the standard price; minor adjustments may not affect that price but major changes may result in  a slightly higher price

For lanolising we use and recommend Lansinoh®.This is not just a coating applied to the  outer layer of wool ; instead the soaker is soaked in the solution so every fibre is impregnated with lanolin , replacing some of the natural lanolin that was stripped out in the manufacturing process;therefore the soakers perform very well day and night.Sprays tend to just coat the outside of the wool instead of soaking right into every fibre, which is why we prefer a lanolin that dissolves. Lansinoh® is  ultra pure anhydrous lanolin with no preservatives and available from Australian pharmacies. The soaker should not feel too sticky after being lanolised. Lanolising is not necessary with every wash, and washing is not necessary with every use, soakers can be air dried between uses and only washed every couple of weeks or when necessary, eg when soiled, or when smelly or when you feel they are not performing properly.Knitwear containing elastic may need to be washed more often than those without.

Check out our range of soakers "LITTLE JAKES"® and our original "COLOURS OF AUSTRALIA" plus our longies including CEEJAKES®  and SKIRT-A-LONGS.More colours can be seen on the GALLERY page.

All soakers are one size fits most. Every one of our Colours of Australia range  is knitted from 100% pure Australian wool.

The rise is generous so that  the soaker comfortably covers the whole nappy. As the variegated yarn in these soakers is mostly hand dyed,we are not always able to get the same colour variation again, but will source alternatives.

We try to keep prices  at a sensible level, without compromising on quality. We take pride in our work and the reason we can offer you top quality products at a sensible price is because our knitters are very experienced and can work very fast to produce beautiful soakers for you, our valued customers. To date we have knitted hundreds of soakers and longies and received 100% excellent feedback. We can produce garments quite fast but would like to stress that there are only 2 of us knitting and we knit totally by hand with knitting needles, which we consider is the only true "hand knitting". No machines are used at all so we are very proud of our achievement. Our pattern is the result of many years of hard work by one of our two knitters.  We thank our customers for their  support of our products. Hand dyed wool is specially prepared for us by an expert in the art of dyeing yarn, who uses the correct and best quality dyes. They are not dyed with food colourings.
